Is Cheap Gasoline Hurting Your Engine?

We’ve all done it; keep driving until we find the cheapest price per gallon. But have you ever wondered if saving a few pennies here and there is putting your engine at risk? Gas costs an arm and a leg these days and premium gas has been found to not make any difference. Port City Nissan is tempted daily to go to an off-brand station to save a few cents per gallon. Lucky for you, Port City Nissan, with the help of Edmunds.com, has done the investigating for you and here’s what we found.

So… Does It Matter?

The answer is, no! The engineers from AAA, or the American Automobile Association, have found that vehicle’s are able to adjust to the variations in fuel thanks to advanced technology. The chief automotive engineer with the Automobile Club of Southern California says you should “buy the cheapest gas that is the closest to you.” That’s because when it comes down to it, you shouldn’t notice any difference in your vehicle's performance if you use off-brands.

So… Why Are There Different Kinds Of Gasoline?

It’s all about the recipe, just like a Dunkin Donuts coffee tastes different than Starbucks. One isn’t better than the other, they just don’t all add fancy shots and syrups like ‘Bucks’ does. Gas works the same way and it’s not all the same. They start with “base gas” then mix in additives to clean the engine and reduce emissions. Companies can then add in their own additives and might claim they have secret ingredients to make theirs better than the rest. This doesn’t mean the off-brand station on the corner is total junk. It won’t hurt your vehicle. It all starts the same way so in Port City Nissan’s opinion, use whatever gas revs your engines!
